What is Green Printing?

Green Printing, also known as eco-friendly printing or sustainable printing, refers to a printing process that takes into account the environmental impact of printing and aims to minimise this.

Here at Lanes Printers, we are committed to sustainable and environmentally friendly printing practices.

Our approach balances the need for high-quality printing with the need to protect and sustain the environment. Our Green printing practices can help reduce the carbon footprint of printing, reducing waste, as well as conserve natural resources. We even have a few blog posts with helpful tips on how you can make a difference to the environment. Read our blog about reducing the carbon footprint of your business here!

Recycled Paper

Seeded Paper

How cool would it be if you could grow flowers by planting paper you no longer wanted?

Here at Lanes, we are proud advocates of green printing, and we've made that idea a reality! Our seeded paper is not only made from recycled paper, but also contains real seeds that sprout into a beautiful mixture of wild flowers and herbs when planted. It's a fun and helpful way to give back to the environment, while adding a touch of nature to your surroundings.

Printed lithographically on 280gsm paper as our standard, with various thickness options available, our eco-friendly paper is perfect for postcards, greetings cards, flyers, business cards, packaging, and more. We even offer die-cutting services to create bespoke shapes that suit your needs.

It's important to note that as each sheet of paper is unique and contains seeds, slight variations may occur during the printing process. Occasionally, some seeds may come loose, resulting in minor imperfections or slight interference with fine text. However, we embrace these natural aspects of the material, showcasing the authenticity and eco-consciousness of the green printing process. See our case study on biodegradable laminates and paper here!

Notpla (Seaweed Paper)

This unique paper is made from one of nature’s most renewable resources, brown seaweed.

Seaweed grows up to 1m per day, it doesn’t compete with food crops, doesn’t need fresh water or fertiliser and actively contributes to de-acidifying our oceans.

Notpla paper can be printed both lithographically and digitally so it is suitable for a wide range of applications including packaging. One consideration is that detailed print can be obscured due to the naturally mottled colour. Simple designs work beautifully with this distinctive paper.

The pros of using this paper for green printing are endless –  100% vegan, water resistant, grease proof, biodegradable. It performs like plastic, breaks down like fruit!

Read our latest case study about our collaboration with Notpla - the 2022 winner of the Earthshot Prize.

Algae Paper

Shiro Alga Carta is manufactured using excess algae from the Venice Lagoon.

The algae, harvested every year, are combined with FSC fibres and thus replace a part of the cellulose normally used in paper production.

The printing and converting ability of Alga Carta makes it ideal for any creative, publishing and packaging project. The seaweed particles are visible on the surface to give a unique natural look.

Alga Carta is recyclable, biodegradable, FSC™ certified and made using EKOenergy, the renewable energy self-produced in our hydroelectric plant. Furthermore, in line with our green printing practices, the unavoidable residual emissions have been zeroed.

Fruit & Nut Paper

Crush is an eco friendly range that uses agro-industrial waste to replace 15% of the tree pulp in the manufacturing process.

This is more environmentally friendly than the typical recycling process.

Crush is FSC™ certified, produced with EKOenergy, GMO free, contains 40% post-consumer recycled waste and resulting in a 20% reduction in carbon footprint. Both the production process and the product are protected by European patent.

Crush is suitable for all applications, including luxury packaging, brochures, stationery tags, cards and labels. But what truly sets Crush apart is the extra dimension it offers customers who want a green printing option AND to stand out. For example, how wonderful that a paper made using grape residues can be used to make a wine label!

Crush incorporates ten organic residues that inspire the natural range of colours, citrus fruits, grapes, corn, olives, coffee, kiwi fruits, hazelnuts, almonds, cherries, lavender, cocoa and coconut.

Coffee paper

Made from 100% recycled fibres and used increasingly in premium packaging for luxury goods.

Inclusion Coffee comes in to complement and enlarge our green printing collection, giving our customers a paper and board range that contains 95% recycled PCW fibre and 5% Coffee waste.

By introducing the coffee into the pulp, it replaces cellulose content and therefore requires less water and energy to produce.

Its superior printability makes it particularly suitable for high end printing including packaging, brochures and menus.

Visit our Commerical Print page to see all the printed products we have avaliable, or get in touch if you have any questions.

Recycling and Waste

We are proud to embrace green printing practices in our company.

We recycle all cardboard, all paper and any stock that can be recycled, including plastic, is taken or collected in order to be reused and recycled into further stock.

In doing this we know we are consciously helping the environment become a greener and more efficient place. Our commitment to green printing extends to our paper waste, which is always recycled.

In instances where we need to use paper that cannot be recycled, we ensure that it is always sustainably sourced and originates from responsibly managed forests. This ensures our paper consumption has minimal impact on the environment.

Green Printing - Recycling Paper

Carbon Balanced Initiative

An innovative initiative that offsets the carbon emissions from the production of the paper we use.

The World Land Trust's Carbon Balanced program focuses on measuring your impact on the world in terms of green house gas emissions, and making progressive steps to reduce the emissions that you are responsible for. For those emissions that you are unable to reduce further, these are then 'balanced' or offset.

These are balanced by conserving ecologically important forestry that were under imminent threat of clearance. By saving these standing forests, this locks in the carbon, as the trees continue to capture and store carbon dioxide that would have otherwise been released into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change.

By supporting the Carbon Balanced Paper Initiative, we are actively contributing to carbon reduction efforts and promoting a sustainable future.

Roll of Paper

ISO 14001 Environmental Standard

We proudly adhere to the ISO 14001 Environmental Standard as part of our dedication to green printing practices.

The ISO 14000 is a family of standards specifically designed to guide organisations in minimising the negative impact of their operations or processes on the environment. By complying with this standard, we prioritise environmental management and ensure that our practices align with applicable laws, regulations, and other environmentally oriented requirements.

Through our adherence to ISO 14001, we strive to minimise our carbon footprint and promote a greener future. We continuously evaluate and improve our processes to reduce waste, conserve resources, and implement eco-friendly solutions in our environmental printing operations.

By choosing Lanes Printers, you can be confident that your printing needs are being met with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and the highest standards of green printing practices.
